The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred in 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. 31 people died directly as a result of the accident.

Chernobyl children receive generous donation from golf challenge

This Christmas saw 50 children from the most affected regions of the Chernobyl disaster spend their Christmas holidays in Ireland. Despite an eventful arrival of three flight diversions, snow blizzards and 3,000 miles of travel the children arrived safely and were welcomed by their host families at Dublin Airport.

Families fight Belarus travel ban

The Chernobyl Children’s Project has announced, that despite a ban on Belarusian children travelling internationally, they are expecting the ban to be lifted and are seeking host families for 2009.

MEP has written to the Belarus and Irish Government -

MEP Liam Aylward has written to the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin, and the EU Ambassador to Belarus, Senko Vladimir, calling for a long-term agreement to be put in place between the Belarussian and Irish governments to ensure that 200 children from Chernobyl will be able to visit Ireland this coming Christmas and at all other times.
