Tesco supports local suppliers as it opens iconic Headford store

Tesco Ireland's Commercial Director, Joe Manning, said that the emphasis on local suppliers is something that comes naturally to Tesco, given that they are "by and far the biggest purchaser of Irish produce in the world".

The benefits of buying local

The grocery sector has been undergoing significant change in recent years. Apart from the challenging economic environment that has no doubt put considerable pressure on consumer spending and food retail, there has also been a significant change in the structure of the grocery sector in terms of participants. While the German chains gained a significant foothold, community based owner-operated local grocery, convenience shops, and supermarkets are correctly regarded as the economic and social mainstay of rural towns and villages and as such play an important role in larger urban areas. Locally owned grocery and convenience shops are a key part of the social fabric of Irish communities, and make a strong social and economic contribution to communities and economies, much more so than foreign owned multiples.

Joyce’s Supermarket Group win five awards in Best in Fresh awards

Joyce’s Supermarket Group were again celebrating their success in this year’s Best in Fresh awards. In total the group won five awards with the Knocknacarra store beating strong competition from Dublin to win the overall Best in Fresh Deli offering in Ireland and with comments from the judges panel saying it is up with the best in Europe. This is a magnificent achievement and honour for our team of dedicated hard working staff and to our customers for supporting us by choosing us as their destination shop. The Knocknacarra store was overall winner for bBest in Fresh (non affiliated) again seeing off strong competition from around the country.
