Has the planet declared war on humanity over the last year? It certainly seems so as we witness one destructive storm after another in Ireland, heatwaves across Europe and southern Africa, hurricanes leaving trails of destruction from the Bahamas to Mexico, wildfires from Greenland and Siberia to Australia, melting ice from Antarctica to the Arctic, droughts in India, locust swarms in east Africa, increasing acidification of the oceans leading to the loss of a third of the largest structure on earth (Great Barrier Reef), city dwellers dying from poisonous air, flooding at crisis levels on every continent, soils becoming less fertile, and birds disappearing from the skies, insects from the fields and fish from the oceans.

I suppose the hurling final was the event of the weekend. But the result was disappointing, in that the gap between Kilkenny and Tipperary was 14 points, which did not indicate a very close game. Nonetheless, it is always exciting to see hurling played at a very high level, which this was, and the prowess and skill of the combatants on each team was not in doubt.

Internationally acclaimed mountaineering author, Simon Yates, will visit Galway’s Town Hall Theatre next Thursday, September 7, to present the visually stunning and hugely entertaining My Mountain Life. Best known for his harrowing expedition to the Andes documented in the book and film Touching the Void, Simon is one of the most famous and accomplished exploratory mountaineers of his time.

The 40th Westport Arts Festival kicks off next Wednesday, September 30, and this year’s festival features an eclectic mix of events for all ages across all art forms. The literary programme for this year’s festival includes the award-winning writer, John Banville, whose novel, The Sea, won the Man Booker Prize. There will also be readings from Donal Ryan, Martin Dyar, Geraldine Mills, and Orfhlaith Foyle. Dr Eimear O’Connor, art historian and author and curator, will give a presentation on Seán Keating and the Art of the Rebellion. The winners of the festival’s Poetry Competition will be announced at a special prize-giving evening of poetry and music in The Creel, featuring writer and singer-songwriter, Orlagh de Bhaldraithe.
