Government TDs welcome school improvement works

Both the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, and his Fine Gael colleague, John O’Mahony TD, have welcomed the announcement of funding for improvement works for schools in Mayo. In relation to funding for Mount St Michael Secondary School under the Department of Education and Skills, Emergency Works Scheme, Minister of State Ring said this week: “I am pleased that Mount St Michael Secondary School has been sanctioned funding under the Emergency Works Scheme. The funding for will be used for electrical works.”

Harkin hails Gortskehy NS on 125th Anniversary

"Gortskehy is a perfect example of why we must ensure that small schools in rural areas continue to serve their community." This was stated by Ireland North and West MEP Marian Harkin when she unveiled a plaque to mark the 125 year anniversary of Gortskehy National School, this week.

The children of Gortskehy National School located at Annefield, Hollymount, enjoy all the benefits of attending school in the beautiful pastoral landscape of the rolling plains of south Mayo, surrounded by green fields and ancient stone walls. The only sounds that punctuate the air outside are those of birds singing and cattle grazing in the surrounding pastures.

Gortskehy NS features on community TV channel

Gortskehy National School is the first primary school in Ireland to have the pupils' video work featured on An Lar TV, a community TV channel for the Irish Diaspora. anlar.tv has an audience of between 2,500 and 3,000 people a day in some 50 countries. Gortskehy school joins a list of other educators providing content for the channel such as the University of Limerick, the Royal College of Science at UCD, and the Irish School of Animation in Dublin.
