The Artist next on the silver screen at Linenhall Film Club
The next screening at Linenhall Film Club is the universally acclaimed Oscar-winning film The Artist. Travel back to a golden age of cinema in this enchanting comedic tribute to silent films. It is 1927, and the handsome, debonaire, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is Hollywood’s biggest star. Unhappily married, he unwittingly steals the heart of unknown extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), who dreams of stardom. When the studio converts to the ‘talkies’, Valentin takes it upon himself to keep the silent era alive, risking his career and his fortune. Needing little introduction at this stage, The Artist became the most awarded French film in history, scooping three Golden Globes, seven BAFTAs, and five Oscars for this highly entertaining romantic comedy-drama. Here is a chance to see it on the big screen as it was intended. Laugh, cry, love it.
Continuing the family legacy
WALK THE Line told the story of Johnny Cash and his tempestuous love affair with the woman who was to become his wife - singer/songwriter June Carter. It won an Oscar, two BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globes and the soundtrack won legions of new fans for the Carter/Cash family.
Slumdog Millionaire
When it comes to rags to riches stories you either love them or hate them; some are just verging on nauseatingly sweet while others just strike the right balance between real-life grit and the hopelessly optimistic, Slumdog Millionaire falls into the latter category, thanks to the directorial expertise of Danny Boyle (Transpotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) and Loveleen Tandan.
