Our photograph was taken on June 5, 1927 from the platform of a Cumann na nGaedheal election rally in Eyre Square. The crowd (almost entirely male), “looked voters every one”. In the background you can see the Browne Doorway and the Railway Hotel.

FOR A few months during 1927, Galway city and county – it was all one constituency then – was represented in the Dáil by Gilbert Lynch. He won the seat in June and lost it in September.

For a country that is often highly conservative, Ireland has produced many important and influential socialist activists, thinkers, and politicians, and many of them have come from Galway.
