Six students and lecturers from NUI Galway have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships to continue their work in the United Staters.

The Health Economics and Policy Analysis research group at NUI Galway will host a one day conference on obesity Friday, 17 January. Obesity is complex, interdisciplinary problem that involves genetics, physiology, the environment, psychology, and economics.

“There is an urgent need for women to learn more about the risks to their health from diabetes,” says local heart and stroke charity Croí. Young women who are planning a pregnancy and who currently have diabetes need to take special steps to protect their health and that of their baby. Equally as many as 12 per cent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, which if not managed, can have adverse effects on the health of both the mother and the baby.

Pregnant women are currently being recruited into a new NUI Galway-led clinical trial which hopes to develop effective measures to prevent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).

NUI Galway and the University of Ulster have joined forces with HSE West and the Western Health and Social Care Trust to create a collaborative cross-border partnership on diabetes-related research.

An information booklet on the management of diabetes in pregnancy aims to promote high quality care and service to women with the condition to ensure the outcome for mother and baby matches that of non-diabetic women.
