The Order of Malta Ambulance Corps was established in Galway in October 1937 by Dr Conor O’Malley. The first meeting took place in the old Central Hospital when Dr O’Malley commenced a series of first aid lectures to a group who finally did exams and became members of the Order of Malta, generally known as the Knights of Malta.

There is a general lack of specific references to dancing in our older literature but it would be remarkable if there was no dancing in ancient Ireland, if a people with a native taste for music had no knowledge of the kindred art of dancing. There are two Irish words for dance, ‘damhsa’ and ‘rince’. The first is derived from the French ‘danse’ and the second from the English ’rink’ as in skating on ice. The Normans are credited with introducing ‘round dances’ to Ireland.

This photograph of The Crescent, which was originally known as Palmyra Crescent, was taken c1940. Palmyra in Syria is very much in the news these days, but I cannot think of any reason why someone would name a road in Galway after it.
