It's Christmas week for football fans this weekend with the start of the Mayo GAA Senior Football Championship.

After three rounds of action in the group stages and 24 games, the 16 teams that were at the starting line of the Mayo GAA Senior Football Championship has been whittled down to eight, and by Sunday evening there will be just four teams left standing in the race for the Paddy Moclair Cup.

The last four sides left standing in the Mayo Senior Football championship will go toe-to-toe over the weekend in what promises to be a thrilling couple of days of football in the county grounds.

The repeat of last year's final between Castlebar Mitchels and Ballintubber - which also marks a meeting of two teams that have split seven of the last eight senior titles between them - is the main attraction of tomorrow night's double header in MacHale Park.

The quarter final spots of the Mayo senior championship have been filled. Five teams had already qualified for the last eight before a ball was thrown in in the final group games, with a little bit of house-keeping to be done to see which teams finished top and which teams finished runners up.

It all comes down to next Sunday for Mayo.

There has been little time for rest for Castlebar Mitchels since the club scene swung back into action in recent weeks, they had last weekend off after their win over Ballintubber in the county final - but come tomorrow afternoon it is back to business as they welcome Leitrim champions Mohill to MacHale Park with a place in the semi-final of the Connacht championship up for grabs.

The Mayo GAA season kept moving this weekend with the semi-finals in both the senior and intermediate championships, a number of relegation games and some league deciders taking place over a hectic 30 hours or so between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.

This is the one that neutrals and supporters alike have been looking forward to since each side won its respective county title. The sides have met twice in the last three years, with Castlebar Mitchels gaining the upper hand on both of those occasions and going all the way to the All Ireland final. In the year they did not meet, Corofin saw off the best Mayo could offer, made it as far as St Patrick's Day, and brought the Andy Merrigan Cup home for the second time in their history.
