Historic win for Mervue United
For the second Friday running, a club from Galway travelled east for a decisive fixture. While Galway United’s celebrations may have been on a larger scale, there were similar scenes of delight and satisfaction at a mission accomplished once the final whistle went at Station Road to confirm Mervue United’s, in the end, comfortable victory over Kildare County.
Important year in store for Mervue
Making decisions can be difficult. Since their stirring play/off success at Station Road over Kildare County when Mervue United performed diligently there have been debate and conferences. Now it appears a place in the Eircom League proper will be accepted as Mervue seek a licence. Is it the correct route to take? A provocative question indeed.
Scholars from St Brendan's, 1956
St Brendan's National School opened on St Brendan's Road, Woodquay, in 1916. It was an all-male school which initially catered for boys from Woodquay, Sickeen, and Bohermore. After World War II it began to attract pupils from Shantalla and Newcastle. The school closed down in the 1960s with most of the boys transferring to St Patrick's. The school building was hidden behind a high wall, and it was later demolished. Part of the boundary wall is still visible at the back of the rather dull office block that replaced it.
