Kiltane edge through in day of drama
After this weekends final round of action in the group stages of the Mayo GAA Senior Football Championship we now know the eight sides who’ll be contesting the knock-out stages. Breaffy, Castlebar Mitchels, Ballintubber and Kiltane all won their groups and Knockmore, Ballina Stephenites, Aghamore and Garrymore joined them after finishing in second place in their respective groups.
O’Mahony wants Mayo to remain in new constituency name
Fine Gael Dep John O’Mahony has called for the newly restructured Galway West constituency to change its name to Galway West-South Mayo. Dep O’Mahony was speaking in last Thursday’s Dáil debate on the restructuring of constituencies around the country and made his case for the renaming of the constituency, even though he admitted that he did not agree with the redrawing of the boundaries for counties in the west and northwest. He told the house: “To leave things as they are is not an option. I do not object to the proposed reduction in the number of deputies. However, I fail to see the logic in the changes to the constituency boundaries in the western and northwestern regions, in particular.” The Fine Gael TD commented that after speaking to a number of people in the area they had raised a concern that Mayo was not even in the title of the new constituency. “I have spoken to people on all sides of the political divide in the south Mayo region who say they are confused and angered by the new electoral boundaries. Many of them have pointed out that south Mayo is not even included in the name of the new Galway West constituency. Other deputies have also contacted the Minister about the naming of the new constituency. I ask him to address this matter and to have the constituency renamed as Galway West-South Mayo.”
Old heads come through in the championship
Following the penultimate weekend of action in the group stages of the Royal Theatre senior football championship seven of the eight quarter finalists have emerged. On Saturday evening, Ballina and Knockmore booked their places in the last eight draw. Knockmore topped section four with five points from their three games thanks to a 0-15 to 0-9 win over 2008 champions Ballaghaderreen. The east Mayo men now have to navigate their way through the relegation play offs to ensure they hold on to their senior status for next season. Ballinrobe who were drawn in the group of death for not the first time in recent history, had a great chance to make the quarter final going into the last round of games. They were a point ahead of Ballina and had a home draw against the Stephenites, but it was the north Mayo men who came out on top steam rolling to an easy 3-7 to 0-9 win over Norman O'Brien's side. The performance by Ballina was a fine tribute to the late mother of Paul McGarry who died earlier in the week.
