ONE OF the highlights of last year’s Galway International Arts Festival was Druid’s production of Sonya Kelly’s scintillating comedy, Furniture. A big hit with critics and audiences, it makes a welcome return to the Town Hall Theatre next month as part of a national tour.

AND SO ends another year of theatre-going, a year of big shows, small shows, professional shows, amateur shows, local shows, and visiting shows. Rather than doing a general review of the year past, I shall focus on the shows I enjoyed most from those I saw.

Shelter and Furniture (Druid Theatre Co, Mick Lally Theatre)

THE WORLD premieres of two plays - Furniture by Sonya Kelly and Shelter by Cristín Kehoe - will be presented by Druid Theatre Company as part of this year's Galway International Arts Festival.

The stars came out for the US premiere of the Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival co-production Ballyturk this week, as the show wowed New York critics.

As 2017 draws to a close, thoughts turn to the New Year and Galway theatre goers have much to look forward to from both home-based and visiting companies and theatre-makers.

And so the curtain falls on another lively year of Galwaytheatre in which both home-based and visiting companies provided much to savour and, as is the way of things, some misses as well as hits.

RISING STAR and Irish soul singer Brian Deady brought down the curtain on this year’s Galway International Arts Festival in fine style with a rousing gig at the Róisín Dubh on Sunday night.

DYSTOPIAS, ISOLATION, characters on the edge are just some of the recurrent themes that announce themselves in Eoghan O’Tuairisc’s Fornocht do Chonaic/Naked I Saw You at An Taibhdhearc, Enda Walsh’s Arlington [a love story] in Leisureland, and Druid’s new staging of Waiting for Godot.
