An Oughterard man who smashed a pint glass into another man’s face after an argument over a drink mix-up spiralled out of control has been sentence to three years in jail suspended for five years, and ordered to pay €5,000 in compensation.

Jail sentences totalling nearly two years were imposed on two brothers who, in an organised operation, travelled from Dublin to Galway on at least two occasions to make gain by breaking into parking meters in the city.

Two brothers charged with causing criminal damage to pay and display machines in the city to get their hands on more than €1,400 have been remanded into further custody to await the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
