Prize money is set to hit a record high for this year's Galway Races, which start on July 27.

One of the sporting and social highlights of the Irish summer - the 2013 Galway Races Summer Festival - will attract 150,000 punters from Monday July 29 to Sunday August 4 — the launch was told on Tuesday at the newly refurbished Panoramic Restaurant and Corrib Bar at Galway Racecourse.

Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) held a ‘Go Racing Kids’ Club’ Day at Galway Racecourse on Tuesday when 288 fifth and sixth class pupils from five local schools took part in demonstrations from RACE (Racing Academy and Centre of Education) and heard talks from jockey Derek O’Connor and local trainer Pauline Gavin and her daughter Sarah.

The Galway Race Ball committee has confirmed that this year’s ball will go ahead. This is the ninth year of the event which has raised in excess of €500,000 for Irish charities. The event is one of the highlights of the Galway Race week calendar and is the place to be seen for the countrys fashionistas.

Long-running sponsors of Galway’s most prestigious horse race, the Galway Plate, will discontinue its support next year.
