The long, and increasingly controversial, saga of the Solas Arthouse Picture Palace Cinema, has taken a step closer to completion with this morning's announcement that the Government has provided additional funding of €735,000 towards the project.

Galway has become the only Irish city, and one of only five cities in the world, to be designated a UNESCO City of Film. The winning of the title could also prove “enormously beneficial” to the city’s on-going bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2020.  

Galway’s bid to become an UNESCO City of Film is one step closer this week after councillors gave their full approval and support for the submission.

Far from being idle or derelict, work is “proceeding satisfactorily” at the Solas Picture Palace site, and the group behind the project to bring an art house cinema to Galway is launching a major campaign to ensure its completion within the next year.

A new website - www.screenwest.ie - is being launched this week by the Galway Film Centre as an information portal which seeks to attract film makers and television producers to the west of Ireland.
