RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will celebrate fifty years on air on 2 April, and to mark this very special occasion the RTÉ Concert Orchestra will travel to Conamara to perform in a gala concert in the heart of the Gaeltacht, broadcast live on radio, with some of the country’s top traditional musicians including Altan, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Steve Cooney, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Cór Chúil Aodha and many more.

Fifty years ago the Gaeltacht Civil Rights Movement was founded, inspired by developments in the Six Counties, the USA, and France. To mark the occasion, hour-long programmes were broadcast on Raidió na Gaeltachta and TG4; it was discussed at the Galway History Festival; and a book is also being published.

During a historic broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta from Pearse’s Cottage in Rosmuc in Connemara on Easter Monday, President Michael D Higgins said that the revival of the Irish language was a central aim of the generation who rose up on Easter Monday 1916, and that it was a fitting tribute to those leaders that the programme be broadcast from there on Easter Monday.
