Almost 20 local voluntary organisations will be exhibiting at a major volunteering event taking place in GMIT Mayo (St Mary’s Hall, Castlebar campus) next week.

Business in the Community Ireland revealed this week that top companies contributed more than €198,000 and 687 volunteer hours to Mayo charities and community groups in 2015. They revealed that 19 companies contributed more than €198,000 to support community groups and organisations in Mayo in addressing key social issues and good causes in 2015.

A local volunteer centre has reported a 25 per cent increase in the number of people contacting its service for the first time last year seeking volunteering work. More than half of these had never volunteered before.

ayo Volunteer Centre is encouraging not for profit organisations to increase their understanding of new ways of volunteering – as National Volunteering Week comes to an end this Sunday, May 22. The importance of volunteers was highlighted in a new survey of 400 volunteer involving organisations carried out by Volunteer Ireland and the network of Volunteer Centres. The survey found that 53 per cent of organisations that involve volunteers said they could not survive without them.

From over 300 nominations, four exceptional Galway volunteers have been shortlisted for this year’s Volunteer Ireland Awards and will be celebrated at a special ceremony in City Hall, Dublin on December 2.
