Kavanagh set to be key player in Milltown’s challenge
The benefit of the addition of former Kildare star James Kavanagh to Milltown’s senior football championship challenge was clear to see last Saturday evening at Pearse Stadium, as John Concannon’s side gave Cárna-Caiseal a good trimming, on a score-line of 3-14 to 0-5. Kavanagh kicked one terrific point in the first half and also notched a few frees in the second, but it was his work-rate, link-play and overall contribution to the cause that caught the eye. Experienced scoring forwards are hard to come by at the moment, and Kavanagh can be a really key player for the “Scans” as their season progresses.
Sunday at Tuam Stadium
Current county champions Corofin take on Cortoon Shamrocks at 5.15pm on Sunday evening. Mick Culkeen’s charges had an impressive 3-18 to 2-7 win last weekend over a disappointing Bearna outfit and they will feel if they can be a bit more efficient in front of goal, they have a fighting chance in this one.
Salthill-Knocknacarra far too strong for St Michael’s
The other senior city sides, Salthill-Knocknacarra and St Michael’s were also in action last weekend at Pearse Stadium and Gerry Hughes’ men had it all too easy winning on a score-line of 0-13 to 0-5.
Bergin powers Mountbellew
Many GAA people in the county were not pleased with Mountbellew/Moylough’s decision to engage in a lengthy appeal process after their defeat to Micheal Breathnach’s. They had been defeated twice, and the feeling was that they could have accepted their lot and moved on.
Cortoon Shamrocks v Caltra (Sunday 2pm, Tuam Stadium)
These sides met four weeks ago in the league over in Caltra and Cortoon won by two points, 1-10 to 1-8. Expect another tight game on Sunday.

NUIG and Corofin expected to advance to the county final
Previewing any game involving NUIG is difficult because you don’t how many of their marquee players will or won’t be available. However, and this is a prediction of which I am confident, if they have all their top players this Sunday, they will be too strong for Cortoon Shamrocks.
