Local cycling and disability activists have long been battling to remove kissing gates from parks and walkways across the city.

“You don’t see us cycling now, but you will,” was the message from a large group of Galway mothers who gathered on the Prom in support of the Salthill Cycleway last Friday.

Monday morning, August 16, 1971 (50 years ago next Monday), started off in a normal way in Galway but that quickly changed very dramatically. A fire was discovered shortly before 11.30am in McDonough’s Yard on Merchants Road. It was spotted by a lady standing across the street at the Tourist Office and she alerted the fire brigade. At the time, there were only about four full-time firefighters in the station but they responded very quickly.

COPE Galway has extended its thanks to Galwegians near and far who have shown solidarity and support for local people in need this Christmas by taking part in the charity’s 10-day “Swim Where You Are” Christmas event, which ended yesterday. The charity, which was unable to hold its traditional Christmas Day swim at Blackrock this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, said it has been overwhelmed by the swim photos and messages of support sent in by well wishers.
