Last fall, I came to the Emerald Isle from India to set free a pipe dream of pursuing creative writing. I was going to begin at the beginning with a master’s programme at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Carrying the biggest bags, I’d ever travelled with and taking the longest flight I’d ever been on, I came with a light mind that had only two things on it: the focused practice of creative writing and immersion into the Irish culture.

It's that time of the year again when couples get all loved up and splash out on romantic gifts and treats to express their passion for one another. That's right Valentine's Day is on Sunday but with the country in lockdown, coming up with ideas to celebrate the day may prove difficult. This year and last have been tough for everyone and we thought we ALL deserve a bit of love.

WITH THE cinemas closed for what will hopefully be only three weeks, I have returned to streaming platforms which served us so well during the initial lockdown, and chosen four films on Netflix I believe are worth your time.

With the cinemas closed and Ireland in self isolation, visual entertainment distraction, films which will engross are vastly important and so to Netflix and Amazon Prime most families will turn for their daily viewing requirements.

WITH THE CINEMAS closed, and Ireland in lockdown generally, we need distractions, good things to do, and stuff that will raise spirits, and this is where Netflix and Amazon come in.

1. First Reformed: My number one film of the year and walking in I thought I would hate it. Powerful performance from Ethan Hawke playing a priest questioning his faith in the modern world. The ending has been divisive, but to me the film does not work without it.

Annie and Duncan are a reasonably happy couple in their late thirties living in a seaside town in England. Duncan has an obsession - he hosts a fan page for nineties musician Tucker Crowe. Crowe is a kind of Jeff Buckley like singer who disappeared after recording one great album - Juliet, Naked.

Summer means blockbuster movies and there is a great line up of entertainment at Mayo Movie World at the minute.

Coming soon to Nun’s Island Theatre, Fregoli present Tape by American playwright Stephen Belber, a play which the company previously presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008 where it received a five star review.
