On Saturday afternoon at Crescent United’s old pitch in Mervue, Knocknacarra FC’s emergence as a respected force in Galway underage football was confirmed.

Mark Herrick’s passion for the Galway United cause endures. Part of John Caulfield’s able backroom team since the summer, Herrick is delighted to be involved in the SSE Airtricity League again,

“It is just brilliant to be back playing with Galway, playing with some familiar faces again,” Becky Walsh says about her welcome return to the west of Ireland.

“Sometimes that is the life of a goalkeeper - you always have to be ready, you never know what is going to happen,” Luke Dennison says moments after completing his first start for Galway United with a clean sheet against Treaty United in the SSE Aitricity League.

In January 1987 Derek Rogers moved from the capital to play for Galway United. Rogers has lived in the west of Ireland ever since, becoming more of a Galwegian than the locals themselves.

Galway United’s thirst for national football honours was finally satisfied in Lansdowne Road in 1991 with a 1-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup. It was a success that gave reality to dreams cherished for so long by so many who had fostered local football for decades.
