What a week it has been! I don't think I've ever heard as many rumours about player injuries ahead of an All-Ireland final. The Kilkenny team returned to training last Monday night after their customary weekend away in Wexford.

Last weekend was once again a very busy one for Kilkenny hurling as round two of the St Canice’s Credit Union Senior Hurling and the Michael Lyng Intermediate Hurling League took place. Teams have two weeks to prepare for these encounters. For teams that had lost or performed below par in round one, this was their chance to redeem themselves and put the all important points on the board.

Erin's Own return to the senior ranks next year after defeating Danesfort by a goal in a hard-fought but most enjoyable intermediate final last Sunday. Conditions were far from ideal in Nowlan Park, strong winds prevailed throughout this encounter. but it didn't deter either side from producing some good honest action. The more rounded and experienced 'Comer side had stars all over the pitch, but none shone more brightly than my ex-intercounty colleague Davy Buggy. Davy has given many fine displays in the 'Comer jersey down through the years but this will definitely rank as one of the best and one of the most important. He will probably be first to acknowledge that he is not blessed with blinding speed, but like any good hurler, he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. The popular Buggy is widely acknowledged in hurling terms as having one of the best pairs of hands in Kilkenny. His touch, allied with a clever hurling brain, saw him rattle off 1-4 last Sunday a scoring return that did much to send 'Comer back to the senior ranks.

All three Kilkenny county champions negotiated their first round Leinster Championship matches last weekend, junior champion's Tullogher Rosbercon got the ball rolling in the best possible way by beating St Peregrines/Trinity Gael's of Dublin by 6 points in O'Toole Park on Saturday. Sunday saw Nowlan Park play host to a double header, intermediate champion’s Erin’s Own of Castlecomer pitted themselves against Carlow senior winners, Naomh Bríd of Old Leighlin. This game went down to the wire. The Comer men eventually came out on top by 2 points in what was described as a cracking game. The Old Leighlin men are very passionate about their hurling, they went to war last Sunday without their veteran centre back and former county and Leinster star, Johnny Nevin, who was away in Australia on over 40s duty. Nevin may be getting on, but by all accounts he still has the drive and passion to compete at the highest level. Comer's cause was helped in the first half by goals from Davy Buggy and Jimmy Byrne, they had to withstand a lot of pressure in the second half before coming out on top. Their next hurdle is Blackwater of Wexford.

The Indian summer that we are experiencing at present has made it very enjoyable for both the players to perform in and for the patrons to view this year’s local championships.
