When hope is being stripped away
There are moments in life that do not pass. They do not fade with time. They do not soften at the edges. They stay sharp, unyielding, and present. A mother turning her face away so her children will not see her hunger. A father standing in silence over the shallow grave of his last cow, not mourning the animal, but everything it stood for. A child whose energy has drained so completely that even play has become too much. These are not images. They are memories.

Community and Environmental campaigners are asking the people of Galway to take part in a litter pick on General Election Day (Sat Feb 8) to help protect the city’s precious land and aquatic mammals, birds and insects that live in its woodlands, rivers and in the seawaters of Galway Bay. It will start at 12pm from the entrance to Terryland Forest Park adjacent to Currys on the Headford Road.

As I write this column, it appears that this Thursday and Friday will be the crunch days when there could well be accumulated snow. All we can do is prepare ourselves, expect the worst and be glad if it doesn’t turn out as severe as has been forecast.
