Poor start costs Loftus Recycling in Portlaoise
A poor start meant that Loftus Recycling were always playing “catch-up” in this National Basketball League division one game in St Mary’s Hall, Portlaoise, on Saturday night. The visitors were without the services of the injured Liam McHale and, with Paul Barrett still recovering from surgery and Ronal McGarrity still unavailable, this was never going to be an easy match for the Ballina men. Subway Portlaoise took full advantage and built up an early lead with their new player Skuzinskas getting most of the baskets. Nothing seemed to go right for the visitors who found it very hard to find scores against a physically stronger Portlaoise team. The home team had built up 13 point advantage at half-time 37-24 with Peter Papic getting most of the Ballina scores.

Loftus Recycling secured two valuable points in the National Basketball League Division one when they overcame Bord Gáis Neptune (Cork) in an entertaining game in Ballina Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night.
Great win for Loftus Recycling in Dublin
A severely depleted Loftus Recycling side scored a magnificent victory over Dublin side Tolka Rovers in the National Basketball League (Division 1), in Tolka Sports Centre in Dublin on Saturday night. The Ballina team travelled without several members of the panel due to a combination of injuries and work commitments, but a super performance saw them secure two valuable league points against all odds. Despite some members of the squad arriving on court just before tip-off, having been caught in Croke Park match traffic, Loftus Recycling raced into an early lead with Dara McGarrity firing in three early three-pointers and the game’s top scorer, Peter Papic, adding another three-pointer as well as three two-point baskets and converting two free throws. Tolka appeared shell shocked by the whirlwind start by Ballina which saw them on 23 points at the end of the first quarter while excellent defence by the visitors kept the home side to just 10 points (23:10).
Ballina get season off to a good start
Team Loftus Recycling got its national league division one season off to a good start last Saturday night when they sent the Blue Demons from Cork back home with a defeat. The Ballina men ran out six point winners and were led by the inspirational Liam McHale who played the full game and bagged 12, despite being 46 years of age. The veteran McHale rolled back the clock to spearhead his side’s charge to the points. Ballina trailed at half time by 14 points, but kept plugging away and by the end of the third 10 minute period they had the gap back to seven, trailing 43-36 going into the final straight. Team Loftus Recycling which had to do without the services of Ronan and Dara McGarrity and Paul Barrett, put their shoulder to the wheel and overturned the Cork side’s lead to drive on to a six point win which will give them great confidence going into the games coming up in the future.
