Tributes paid to Castlebar councillors before they step down

The people of Carnacon paid special tribute to retiring Councillors Paddy McGuinness and Johnny Mee at the Castlebar electoral area meeting held in the village last Friday night. The area meeting was moved out of the county town to pay tribute to the Carnacon ladies’ GAA team who captured their third All-Ireland senior football last year. Walter Hughes from the Carnacon Community Council welcomed the members to the village saying: “It’s a rare and unique achievement for a rural area to see All-Ireland titles come our way. We are delighted to have such an occasion to recognise the achievements and the honour the girls brought to the area.”

Death of local democracy at crux of development plan issue

The five-member delegation from Mayo County Council which met with the Oireachtas Committee for Environment, Heritage and Local Government left Government buildings on Tuesday night happy that they had put forward their best case for the retention of the new Mayo County Development Plan. The issue of the plan has rumbled on since it was adopted in April unanimously by the 31 elected members of Mayo County Council, with a number of submissions and changes put forward by the Minister for Environment, John Gormley, and his department and issued on his behalf by County Manager Des Mahon.
