Pharmacists in Kilkenny are looking at a bleak and uncertain future if the Minister for Health does not agree to enter into negotiations with pharmacists who are refusing to fill prescriptions under the medical card scheme and state drugs scheme from tomorrow.

The pharmacist advised her to try another pharmacy which might have it in stock or she was offered a home delivery service — however, there was no timeframe given as to when this delivery would take place. The woman left saying she was “anxious” about her health as she needed the medication with expediency, and she also left without prescriptions filled for her elderly neighbour and for a teenager.

The pharmacy/HSE action is over for now with hundreds of pharmacists once again dispensing medicines under the Community Drug Schemes. But the Irish Pharmaceutical Union has warned that if the HSE places any obstacles in the way of pharmacies resuming normal services they will be met with a “very swift response”.
