Nigh on 100 brave swimmers dived into a cold Lough Ree on Sunday morning last with the water temperature registering a chilly eight degrees and it was all in the name of Science Week.

Local open water swimmers, Serena Friel and Karen Reynolds, recently presented Lough Ree RNLI with a cheque for €11,300 following a fund raising swim on the lake last month.

Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew were requested to come to the assistance of four persons on board a barge which ran aground on Saturday afternoon last.
