A number of businesses in east mayo that are trying to expand are finding it difficult to do so, due to poor broadband in the area, the February meeting of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District was told this week.

It took almost a quarter-of-an-hour and the casting vote of the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Michael Smyth to pass a vote at the council's July meeting which was held remotely this week.

Fianna Fáil Swinford-based councillor Michael Smyth is the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council. Cathaoirleach Smyth takes over the position from Independent Cllr Richard Finn, who held the position for the past 12 months.

Following on from a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General that found a taskforce appointed to assess flood risks did not meet for six years before last July, the members of the Claremorris Municipal District have called for members of local authorities from the affected areas to be appointed to the taskforce.
