It's Christmas week for football fans this weekend with the start of the Mayo GAA Senior Football Championship.

Castlebar Mitchels and Knockmore will set up an intriguing league final clash this Sunday in Ballina after coming through their respective semi-finals last weekend.

The Mayo hurling championships will get going this weekend with the senior championship kicking things off this evening when the defending county and provincial champions Tooreen head to Castlebar to take on the Mitchels men at 7.30pm.

Anyone that was of the opinion that Knockmore were on the slide and that the reigning champions weren't capable of holding onto their crown after losing out to Belmullet in round two, had their concerns emphatically answered after Ray Dempsey's team did a demolition job on Charlestown Sarsfields in round three in Breaffy winning, by 3-15 to 2-10.

After three rounds of action in the group stages and 24 games, the 16 teams that were at the starting line of the Mayo GAA Senior Football Championship has been whittled down to eight, and by Sunday evening there will be just four teams left standing in the race for the Paddy Moclair Cup.

Over the past 12 seasons, just four clubs have ended the year with the Moclair Cup in their possession and for nine of those years, it was passed between Castlebar Mitchels and Ballintubber, with Ballaghaderreen winning twice and Charlestown once.

After a hectic weekend of action in round one of the senior championship, this coming weekend will make or break the senior championship for a number of teams.

They have won more Moclair Cups than any other club in the county with 36 to their name, but it has been 13 years since Ballina Stephenites last brought the old trophy to the banks of the Moy.

Club football has been back up and running for the past few weeks, but this is the big one that we all have been waiting for.
