A service of remembrance for parents and families of all babies and children who died last year at Mayo General Hospital, including miscarriages, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths, will take place at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Friday February 27.

Exactly one year to the day after Owen Maughan was gunned down in broad daylight at the Top Oil filling station at Moneen, Castlebar, Superintendent Pat Diskin issued a renewed appeal for any information which might assist in the murder investigation.

The Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar was the venue for a very special performance of Handel’s Messiah last Sunday night.

The soaring and iconic ‘Hallelujah’ chorus of Handel’s Messiah is rumoured to have moved King George II so much at the London premiere of the work in March 1743, that the monarch jumped to his feet in admiration, compelling the rest of the audience to follow suit.

Following on from the enormous success of The Handel Challenge 2013, the task has once again been set to recruit 100 local singers to fundraise €200 each, rehearse all choruses and perform Handel’s Messiah on November 2 2014 in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.  Featuring top international soloists and orchestra, this promises to be a truly spectacular night.  Over €33,000 was raised by this event for Mayo/Roscommon Hospice in 2013.  This year, all funds raised will be divided between Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Mayo Mental Health.

James Kilbane is to be the special guest artist for the Castlebar Gospel Choir’s summer concernt on Sunday, May 11.

The hardworking men and women of the Handel Challenge Choir and Committee handed over a cheque for €33,543 to Mayo Roscommon Hospice at an event held in The Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar, on Saturday February 8.
