1798 commemoration in Castlebar Library

Mayo County Library is hosting a major commemoration of the 225th anniversary of the 1798 rebellion in Ireland also known as ‘The Year of the French or Bliain na bhFrancach’. The programme coincides with 1798 Music Festival which will be held in the town over the weekend and its focus on history and heritage complements the more public events of the festival. A resolution to recommend that Mayo County Council dispose of the old Castlebar library by selling to a private buyer, was agreed by Castlebar councillors this week - with just one dissenting voice, Cllr Michael Kilcoyne. The matter will now go back before Mayo County Council for approval by members.

Mayo healthy reading scheme launched at Castlebar library

The Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme was recently launched at Castlebar Library. This joint initiative by the HSE and Mayo County Council Library Services aims to promote the availability of a wide variety of self help books on a range of common psychological, emotional, and parenting issues. A total of 88 books are available free to all library members at the various library branches throughout the county. Topics covered include bereavement, depression, relationship problems, parenting issues, and self esteem. Some of the books available include Children and Bullying, Overcoming Depression, Overcoming Childhood Trauma, The Mindful Way Through Depression, and Parent Power. All of the books have been recommended by health professionals.

Exhibition explores women's role in 1912–1922 events

A fascinating exhibition on the women who fought for Irish independence has just been launched in Castlebar Library. The exhibition, highlights as it says “What did the women do?” through the stories of Cumann na mBan and the role of women in the cultural, literary, and ultimately political revival of the decade from 1912 to 1922.
