Fine Gael Cllr John Cribben took over the chairmanship of the Claremorris Electoral Area Committee this week for the upcoming year. The Ballyhaunis councillor took over from Cllr Patsy O’Brien who said while he enjoyed chairing the meetings he was looking forward to getting back to just being a councillor at the meetings and not having to be as restrained as he was in the chair when addressing issues.

After losing his seat in the 2004 Local Elections, some might have assumed that they had seen the last of Michael Burke in local politics - until the Ballinrobe based business man put himself forward once again last year and the people of the newly formed Claremorris electoral area put their faith in him. This week Cllr Burke completed the full circle on his famous political comeback after becoming first citizen of the county following his election as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

Mayo’s two government TDs were labelled a “disgrace” by county councillors at a meeting of the Claremorris electoral area committee this week over the farming cutbacks announced in Budget 2009.

Community groups in Claremorris and surrounding areas have expressed their disappointment that the social and economic fund which is allocated by the local councillors each year has been pulled.
