Empowering and inspiring European citizens to become citizens of the sea is one of the key goals of the European Commission’s forthcoming Mission for Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Waters. The Marine Institute and the European Commission are inviting the people of Ireland to complete an online survey on their level of awareness about our oceans and seas, and share what they believe are the top priorities for the health of our ocean.

A good day’s work done — says retiring Marine Institute chief as Renville voyage ends

The man who grew the Marine Institute from just one person to now, a staff of more than 200, retired last Saturday after 26 years of service — and when I called out to chat with Dr Peter Heffernan for one last time before he stepped down, I met him at the front door, being helped to load boxes into his car. Tá siad ag teacht — RV Celtic Explorer leaves Newfoundland and heads for Galway

image preview

An international team of scientists from six countries set sail last week on Ireland’s national research vessel, RV Celtic Explorer on a major trans-Atlantic voyage to study the impact of climate change on the ocean. Departing from St. John’s Newfoundland, and due to arrive in Galway on 23 May, the Galway-based Marine Institute-led team of experts are surveying a transect of the Atlantic Ocean last surveyed 20 years ago to investigate carbon dioxide levels in the ocean. The survey is essential to understand and project how carbon dioxide emissions are accumulated in the oceans and the atmosphere, as well as its effects on the acidification of the ocean.
