It's good to be back
Mayo snatched a crucial draw from the jaws of defeat with a last gasp heroic kick from net-minder Robbie Hennelly against Donegal in the first round of the National league.
Mayo do what they need to - but bigger tests await
Mayo got their 2021 championship off to a flying start after a facile 3-23 to 0-12 victory over a very disappointing, out of sorts and dispirited Sligo outfit in the Connacht quarter final.
No room for error - it's all or nothing now
There are four Round 3 Super Eight games on this weekend but only one has any real relevance, only one has everything at stake. Kerry will beat Meath by as much as they want, Tyrone and Dublin are already through to the semi finals and aren't bothered while Cork take on Roscommon in a dead rubber with neither team having anything to play for.
Might Mitchels go looking for another magnificent win
Castlebar Mitchels renew acquaintances with Corofin in the Connachht Club final this Sunday in Tuam in what promises to be a mouth watering clash. Both teams know each other very well at this stage having crossed paths three times in the last number of years. Corofin needing extra-time last year to beat Castlebar in MacHale Park. Coincidently Mitchels have beaten the Galway kingpins twice in Tuam in what were rip-roaring encounters. Neither team seems to be at the level that they were a number of years ago, but they are still very evenly matched.
What Mayo need to do to topple Tipp
After Mayo's superb victory over Tyrone I have to pinch myself to comprehend that Mayo are playing Tipperary in an All-Ireland semifinal on Sunday. It sounds bizarre. If we go back to June 18 and after watching Mayo's poor performance against Galway, we firstly did not see Mayo getting to a semifinal and if they did we certainly did not expect the opposition to be from the premier county. Clare and Tipperary have both been very successful examples of the qualifiers in 2016 but Tipp's trouncing of Connacht champions Galway by nine points has certainly made them the number one success story.
That's what we were waiting for
Now that was more like it. We asked for a performance,we wanted passion,we got them both in abundance. Mayo produced their best display in 12 months to send Ulster champions and hot favourites Tyrone packing out of this year's championship. The game was not the best advertisement for Gaelic football but it was intriguing, intense, and tactical and had everybody on the edge of their seats right until the final whistle.
