As revealed in the Advertiser week, top American medical firm Abiomed has said it hopes to create some 250 jobs in Athlone over the next five years, with the support of the IDA.

The announcements that two major US firms are to set up in Athlone were among the highlights of the IDA’s calendar for 2008, according to their end of year statement released this week.

Fears for Élan jobs in Athlone were compounded this week with the news that the company is to shed 29 jobs over the next month.

Some 250 jobs are to be created in Athlone with the establishment of a research and testing facility by an American pharmaceutical company.
