Aylward condemns killing of two British soldiers

MEP for Kilkenny Liam Aylward has said that the perpetrators of the killing of two British soldiers must be brought to justice.

Mr Aylward made a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday condemning the brutal killing of the two British soldiers.

This was following a minute silence during the opening session of the European Parliament, which was observed for the two soldiers who were shot dead on Saturday evening.

Liam Aylward MEP said "I condemn unreservedly the killing of Mark Quinsey and Sapper Patrick Azimkar and the injuring of four others outside the Massereene Barracks in Antrim town last Saturday.

The Real IRA, a fringe Republican group in Northern Ireland has claimed responsibility for this horrific attack, the first deadly attack on Northern Ireland security forces in 12 years.

“Those who perpetrated these terrorist acts must be brought to justice and made account for their horrific crimes. Their attacks do not command political support from the people in Northern Ireland.

The Good Friday Peace Agreement of 1998 clearly lays out the framework for political and economic development in Northern Ireland. These structures as laid out by the Good Friday Agreement are working well in support of democracy, rule of law, human rights and peace and reconciliation.

“We cannot and we will not allow these individuals destroy the peace that we have worked so hard and for so long to achieve in Northern Ireland," he concluded.
