New art gallery for new exhibition

The Shanti Gallery, Kilkenny is showcasing the work of Gillian Campden and Andrew Snyder in their new exhibition ‘Structures’.

A preview of the show will take place on March 20 between 6pm and 8pm and will be officially opened by Eamon Colman member of Aosdana.

The exhibition will continue until April 30.

Gill’s exhibition “Stone Wall and Nettles”- and Andrew’s “King’s Crown” are on display at the Shanti Gallery space, located behind the Springhill Clinic, Waterford Road where Shanti Yoga has been operating its practice since 2005. It is a new and exciting gallery for visual art in Kilkenny city offering 750 sq feet of exhibiting space. This is its first exhibition

“I like looking at tiny things really big,” says Gillian Campden in relation to her new body of paintings. This statement relates to her paintings and how she investigates and discovers what lies below in a landscape. Framing a small, perhaps insignificant detail of a nettle but giving it prominence within the picture plane. She relates the architecture of old monuments ie Kells Priory in County Kilkenny alongside the skeletal structure of a bramble bush evoking a sense of time and absence.

Meanwhile, Andrew Snyder’s work combines the urban and the imaginary landscapes evoking images of the Old Gasworks in Dublin to resemble a contorted self, a crown with social commentary through the use of brushwork and colour. His work is reminiscent of the stories from Mervin Pyke’s “Gormangast”. Since moving to Kilkenny in 2005 he has worked in the “Artists in Schools” scheme and in many community art projects, teaching adults and children alike in order to make art more and more accessible.
