Deputy Phil Hogan has called on the energy regulator to immediately address the issue of overcharging on estimated ESB bills.
“Many people have been overcharged because they were billed for electricity at higher rates due to their metre not being read prior to price increases,” explained Deputy Hogan.
Deputy Hogan also revealed that many people in rental accommodation who move to a new property could end up paying for electricity used by the previous tenant due to estimated readings.
“The regulator needs to set clear rules on estimated ESB bills to ensure that families are not overcharged,” he said.
“Ireland already has the second highest rate of electricity prices in the EU. Prices can be reduced significantly and the Government must ensure that the regulator acts now.”
