Athletes are set for the national finals

Following another successful weekend at the Leinster indoor track and field championships in Nenagh many of the young athletes will undertake more intensive training in preparation for national finals. These finals are spread over four days: Two in Nenagh on March 28 and 29 and the final two in Magherafelt, Co Derry, on April 4 and 5. Thankfully, after a nine months closure, the athletic track has re-opened. This should lead to an improvement in speeds and allow for much needed development of technical skills.

It is very much a case of home and away with this weekend’s fixtures. The scholars travel to Jordanstown for the All-Ireland schools and intervarsities cross-country on Saturday. On Sunday quite a large contingent of Kilkenny folk head south for the annual “pilgrimage” to Ballycotton. However the largest number will head to Brett’s field on The Sion Road, Kilkenny, for the county short course cross country. The men run 4K and the ladies 2K. The programme will commence at 11.00am with open races for under seven and under nine boys and girls. Next will come cross-country relays where under 11s and under 13s will have 3X250 races and the under 15s have 3X500 races. Under 17s (again boys and girls ) will compete in a 1,500m race. The adult races will complete the day’s busy schedule.
