Defendants get probation for attempted burglary

A repeat offender who pleaded guilty to attempted burglary at a city centre home was given one more chance at Kilkenny District Court this week.

Peter Donnelly, with an address at 38 Hebron Park, Kilkenny, admitted the offence which occurred at 12 Barrack Street on November 12, 2007.

Inspector Liam Connolly told the court on Monday that the defendant entered the unoccupied property with another person on the date in question. “When the landlord entered the house he found two people and called the gardaí, who subsequently called to the house and removed them from the premises,” added Insp Connolly.

The defendant’s solicitor Mr Michael Lanigan said that his client, who has a number of previous offences, was abusing heroin and his life was utterly chaotic at the time.

Mr Lanigan added that his client’s life was now back on track. He added that he has been on a methadone programme for 12 months and has stayed off heroin.

Judge William Harnett told the defendant he would give him ‘a chance’ before fining him €200 and putting him on probation for a period of one year.

Tricia Leahy, with an address at 116 Newpark Close, Kilkenny who also pleaded guilty to the same offence on November 12, 2007 was ordered to enter a probation bond for 18 months.
