Kilkenny’s Unity Singers are heading off on an exciting trip this St Patrick’s Day to Carnegie Hall in New York City where they will take part in a an event entitled A Great Night for the Irish.
The Irish in New York tend to pull out all the stops for St Patrick’s Day and Kilkenny singers will be making a major contribution to this prestigious event this year.
They will be taking part in a star-studded concert at Carnegie Hall on Thursday March 12 staged by the well-known promoter Jim Molloy.
The group will attend and perform also at the Kilkenny Men’s Association and Kilkenny Hurling Club at Yonkers in New York on Friday March 13. The association is chaired by Kells native Dick Dunne while the hurling club is chaired by Castlecomer man Joe O’Shea. The guest of honour of the night will be the police commissioner of the city of Yonkers, Edmund Hartnett (whose mother hails from Graiguenamanagh ).
The Unity Singers will also take part in the St Patrick’s Day parade as part of the New York Kilkenny group which has been given the honour of being the first Irish contingent in the parade which ensures being included in the live television broadcast of the event.
Vincent Duff of the Unity Singers told the Kilkenny Advertiser that the group was very excited about the trip and would be preparing for their performances in advance.
“We are delighted and honoured to be invited to sing at the engagements in New York. It is an invitation that is not to be missed and we hope that the audience at all the events enjoy our performance,” he said.
