The 18-year-old girl who was charged in connection with the death of her brother at a house party during Christmas may face further charges.
Caroline Brennan of Love Lane, Castlecomer, with a current address on the Navan Road, Dublin 7, is charged with assault causing serious harm to her brother Michael Brennan at his uncle’s house on Barrack Street in the town on Tuesday, December 30, 2008.
The State solicitor Gerry Meaney told Castlecomer District Court on Monday that he had just received the file and that he anticipated more serious charges would be brought. He added that the file was being sent to the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions this week.
Mr Meaney also told the court that he was confident he would have the book of evidence ready next month and asked that the case be adjourned for a period of one month.
Judge William agreed to extend time for preparation of the book of evidence and remanded the young woman on continuing bail to appear before the next sitting of Castlecomer District Court on March 16.
Ms Brennan’s solicitor, Michael Lanigan, successfully applied for a change of address on behalf of his client at the same court last month. The 18 year-old was initially granted bail at a sitting of Kilkenny District Court on January 5 and ordered to reside with her parents Billy and Eileen at their home at 17 Church Avenue, Castlecomer.
Ms Brennan’s older brother Michael Brennan was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body at the house where he had been socialising with friends. Emergency services were called to the house but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
