Cats make a winning start to the league

Kilkenny ladies football — Round 1 Bord Gais Energy National League

Kilkenny ladies made a winning start to the Bord Gais Energy National League with a resounding win over Derry on Sunday. After a four and a half hour journey the Cats took time to settle into their game finding themselves four points down after 15 minutes and in danger of letting the game drift away. However the Cats got into the swing of the game and before long had notched up 6 goals and 3 points to run out winners.

This was a good performance by Kilkenny but with plenty of room for improvement. Derry’s failings in defence were to Kilkenny’s advantage and stronger opposition will provide stiffer tests. Paul Whelan’s charges will have bigger fish to fry in the Leinster intermediate championship and All-Ireland series, but for now will focus on reaching the final stages of the league with Wicklow and Antrim visiting Kilkenny in the coming weeks.
