Frantic action on the badminton front

The junior county blitz started last Saturday in O'Loughlins with the under 12 boys and girls starting things off. A total of 21 teams entered this competition and a good day was had by all.

The under 12 'A' girls saw Mooncoin's Rebecca Twomey, Ciara Dowling, Aine Hewston and Laura Dillon Dunphy beat Johnswell's Grainne Walsh, Megan O’Keeffe, Lisa Kehoe and Eilis Brennan in the closest final of the day. The beaten semi-finalists were Galmoy A and Mooncoin B.

The under 12 'B' girls title went to St Mary’s beating Mullinavat 3-1. St Mary’s team : Lydia Hewston, Charlotte Huston, Sarah Morrow and Clodagh Cassin. Mullinavat team: Nieve Walsh, Clodagh Knox, Amy Fogarty, and Ava Whelton. The beaten semi-finalists were Johnswell B and Johnswell C teams.

The under 12 boys 'A' final was contested by St Mary’s Gavin Parr, Eamon Fennelly, Liam Fennelly, Oliver Tredwin and Galmoy’s Kieran Phelan, Brandon Phelan, Sean Phelan and Conor Grace coming out on top. Beaten semi-finalists were Johnstown and Mooncoin A.

The under 12 'B' final was a very close result between Mooncoin B and Tullahought finishing 2 - 2. A single ace decided in favour of Tullahought. On the Tullahought team were Jim Power, James Culleton, David Doyle, and Aidan Ward while Mooncoin team was Niall Quinn, Brandon Power, Ryan Power, and Eoin Corcoran. Beaten semi finalist were Johnswell and Mooncoin B.

Later in the afternoon the under 16 blitz got under way with both boys and girls competing on a round robin system. The Johnswell boys Fergal Brennan, Declan Bennett, Paddy Walsh, and Shane Comerford came out on top while the runners up were Aidan Treacy, John Fitzgerald, Conor Brophy and Eoin Dowling from Mooncoin.

The girls from Mooncoin — Joanne Kelly, Deirdre Walsh, Maeve Lowery and Roisin Crowley proved too strong for the girls from Johnstown which were Meadhbh Broderick, Niamh Cullinane, Caoimhe Norton and Eimear Norton. The under 17 county championships which were due to take place tomorrow (Saturday ) have been called off to be fixed for another date.
