No charges made in relation to Post Office raid

Nobody has yet been charged in relation to the armed raid on the Post Office on High Street in Kilkenny last Friday.

Gardai have said that they are continuing their investigation into the incident and although they had arrested a man in connection with the raid, there is as of yet, nobody charged with the robbery.

Gardai are searching for four masked men who burst into the post office wielding weapons leaving several members of staff and customers terrified after the ordeal. Nobody was injured in the incident however two people were taken to hospital suffering from shock.

The robbery happened just after the post office on High Street opened at 9.30am when it was full of pensioners collecting their weekly pension. At least twenty customers and staff were in the post office at the time of the robbery,

It is understood that at least three of the men were armed but no shots were fired during the raid. The men got away with an undisclosed sum of money.

Gardai were called by several members of the public who were on the scene at the time of the robbery and they proceeded to give chase up along High Street. Damage was done to several cars, along the street-side in the raider’s bid to escape.

A jeep, understood to be a Landrover Discovery, was found by Gardai on Nuncio Road past Kilkenny Castle soon after the incident and it is believed that at this point the raiders split up and two of the men transferred bags into a white transit van and sped off towards the ring road. There were also reports of a third vehicle possibly being involved.
