New Garda station for Mooncoin

Policing in south Kilkenny has received a major boost with the announcement that a new Garda station has been sanctioned for Mooncoin.

There had been serious concerns over the implementation of the new Garda Siochana Policing Plan due to take effect on January 1.

This new plan links Kilkenny with Carlow and cuts the existing link between Kilkenny and Waterford.

There was concern that the new regime could not adequately police south Kilkenny.

Deputy Phil Hogan revealed this week that a new Garda station with an increased police presence, has been sanctioned for Mooncoin.

Both Deputy Hogan and Councillor Pat Dunphy, who have been campaigning over recent months for an amendment to the original policing plan, have welcomed this week’s announcement.

“This new development in Mooncoin along with the existing excellent service from the Thomastown Garda station is good news for the people of south Kilkenny,” said Deputy Hogan.

“We want to compliment the Garda Siochana for their understanding of the situation. It helps to reassure everybody that a police presence is close to them in south Kilkenny. This new plan is expected to come into operation on March 1, 2009.”
