A crafty approach to the recession at Showcase

Local craft makers are preparing for Showcase Ireland and Kilkenny’s most talented craft designers are gearing up to take part in the prestigious event.

The country’s premier craft, gift, fashion and interiors trade fair, takes places in the RDS from January 18-21.

Local ceramists who will be exhibiting at the showcase include: Nicholas Mosse Pottery, Bennettsbridge; Castlearch Pottery, Castle Yard; Karen Morgan and Caroline Dolan, both from Thomastown. Fashion and knitwear exhibitors include: Veronique Knitwear, Castle Yard; milliner Linda McKay from Tullogher; Cushendale Woollen Mills, Graiguenamanagh and Tiunakeenly Leathers, Skeaghvausteen.

Participating jewellery designers include All that Glisters, Thomastown and Astra Trading, based in Inistioge. In addition, the students from the Crafts Council of Ireland’s jewellery and goldsmithing course will showcase a collection of 18ct Gold rings with a coloured gemstone. Homeware exhibitors include Jerpoint Glass Studio and specialist candlemakers Moth to a Flame, located in Bennettsbridge. Finally, Ni Ri Design from Freshford will showcase its unusual Irish greeting cards and limited edition prints.

More than 120 new emerging makers will take part in this year’s showcase in addition to established participants such as Newbridge Silverware and Tipperary Crystal. The addition of a new exhibitor area will give thirty emerging makers the opportunity to showcase new and innovative work over three-days. A separate aisle will comprise stunning products by top craftspeople, including several new names, specially chosen for their quality and design by a panel of international buyers.

For the first year at the showcase there will be an Essence of Ireland selection at this year’s event where up to 10 products will be selected by a panel of experts. The Essence of Ireland will be awarded to products that, through their design, production methods or overall look, depict what is unique about Ireland. It is anticipated that the Essence of Ireland products will be considered as gifts for foreign dignitaries, VIPs and corporate clients.
