In spite of the bacon disaster at the beginning of the month it as business as usual at Kilkenny Mart last Thursday.
Overall the prices obtained were quite similar to the previous week, with a particularly strong demand for the heavy cattle which were in short supply.
Bullocks
The bullocks weighing over 600kg were priced between €300 and €530 ove their weight. One lot of five Charolais weighing 622kg made €1,150 each. The bullocks weighing over 500kg made between €280 and €435 over their weight, while the bullocks weighing between 400kg and 500kg sold between €220 and €380 also over their weight. The bullocks weighing under 400 kg fetched between €160 and €340 also over their weight.
Heifers
The three types of heifers also sold very well with a strong demand all round. If anything the beef types sold at slightly higher prices than the previous week.
The beef heifers were priced between €200 and €470 over their weight. One Charolais weighing 610kg made €1,080. The butcher heifers were priced between €220 and €390 also over their weight, while the store heifers made between €200 and €360 also over their weight.
Culled cows
The Friesian types sold from €160 under their weight to €60 over, while the continental types fared slightly better making from €60 under to €530 over. One Limousin weighing 760kg was sold for €1,290. A small selection of in-calf sucklers were sold between €700 and €950 each.
