A man who was convicted of the unlawful possession of a quantity of cocaine received a five-month prison sentence at Castlecomer District Court this week.
Twenty-five-year-old Michael Dunne, with an address at 27 Green View, Ballyraggett, Co Kilkenny, pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred at the same address on April 19.
Inspector Liam Connolly told the court that when gardaí carried out a search of the premises, they discovered two small plastic bags containing a white powder which, when subsequently tested, turned out to be cocaine. The bags of cocaine weighed 2.0282 grams and were worth €200. The defendant admitted that it was cocaine and was for his own use.
His solicitor Matthew Kearney said that his client, who has a number of previous convictions for similar offences, had received treatment during the summer for his drug problem.
Judge William Harnett fined him €800 and sentenced him to five months in prison to be suspended provided he enter a probation bond for 18 months.
He also fined the defendant €300 for the unlawful possession of drugs at Castle Street, Ballyraggett on February 21.
