A Kilkenny youth has been awarded for his braverey when he assisted a woman in trouble in the river in Kilkenny.
On September 8, 2008, David Donnelly Swift observed a woman in distress after she had entered the River Nore at John's Bridge, Kilkenny.
David used a ring buoy to bring the woman to the river bank where the fire services assisted the casualty from the water. David did Irish Water Safety’s Safety 1 and 2 lifesaving training awards while in sixth class at St Canice’s National School, Kilkenny.
He went to secondary school in St Kierans College and continued his water safety training there under the instruction of Irish Water Safety volunteer Michael Kellegher.
David was presented with a Seiko Just in Time Award from Minister Michael Kitt, Frank Nolan, president of Irish Water Safety, and Noel Wall from Seiko at the Irish Water Safety awards ceremony in Dublin Castle on November 18 last. Rescuers from 14 dramatic near-death incidents received recognition at Irish Water Safety’s national awards ceremony.
